Some Background...

Founded in 1583 - under the charter granted the previous year by King James VI, later James I of England and Wales - Edinburgh was the first civic and first Post-Reformation university in Great Britain.

The "Tounis College" of Edinburgh prospered. By the 18th century the University of Edinburgh had become one of the leading universities in the Western World, which it remains to this day.

The present version of the shield is based on the grant of arms made in 1789.

The saltire, Scotland's national flag, sits between a thistle, the Scottish national emblem and a castle on a rock which refers to when the University was the Tounis College.

The open book in the centre of the shield is a symbol of learning.
