Some Background...

The University of Warwick admitted its first students in October 1965, receiving its grant of Arms a year later in October 1966.
Since its inception the University has developed a well-deserved reputation for academic excellence, frequently being rated as one of the top ten universities in the country.
The shield from the Arms shows, in the first quarter, an elephant bearing a triple towered castle, to represent Coventry; in the second and third quarters, two isotopes of lithium, one with six and one with seven protons and neutrons in its nucleus, with electrons in orbit; in the fourth quarter, a "Bear and Ragged Staff" to represent Warwickshire.
At the top of the shield is a representation of a DNA Double Helix. The scientific symbols represent the University as being at the forefront of discovery.
