Some Background...

The University of Durham Commemorative Jewellery

William van Mildert, last Prince Bishop of Durham, together with the Dean and Chapter of Durham Cathedral, led the efforts to secure an Act of Parliament in 1832 which established the University of Durham.

The first students took up residence in 1833 and the University conferred its first degrees on 8th June 1837 under a Royal Charter formally granted just seven days earlier.
