Some Background...

The University of Reading Commemorative Jewellery

The University of Reading was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1926.

Its origins however, date back to 1892 when a University Extension College was established in Reading, based on the local Schools of Science and Art.

The arms were granted in August 1896. More than a century later, these same arms are still very much in use.

The shield is divided in half across the centre. In the upper part, from the arms of Reading Abbey, are three gold scallops on a red background.

The lower part is derived from the arms of Christ Church, Oxford, to whose initiative the college owed its foundation.

It shows an engrailed white cross with a red rose at its centre.
