Some Background...

The University of Lancaster was established in 1964, with an initial intake of 330 students.
Princess Alexandra was named Chancellor of the University and has remained in office from that time.
The University was originally intended to serve the counties of Cumberland, Westmoreland and Lancaster, north of the Ribble.
The arms of the University allude to these counties as well as to the city and duchy of Lancaster.
Within the shield, the wavy lines represent the river Lune; the two roses come from the arms of the council of Lancaster; the open book is a symbol of learning, as is the lion passant which refers to the learned activities of the University.
