Some Background...

The University of Birmingham Commemorative Jewellery

From 1900 to the present day, the University of Birmingham has been leading the way in research and education, making ground-breaking progress in areas that span industries such as gene structure, medicine, space research and communications.

Birmingham ranks 5th in the UK for research excellence; in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise in 2001, seven areas of Birmingham research achieved the six star rating, a rating only given to studies of significant international importance.

The University's coat of arms was designed in 1900. It features a double headed lion and a mermaid holding a mirror and comb, both of which were taken from the coat of arms of its predecessor, Mason College.

The University added the open book as a symbol of learning and the motto inscribed in the pages of the book, which translates as "through endeavour to the heavens".
