Some Background...

The University of Kent Commemorative Jewellery

The University of Kent was granted its Royal Charter in 1965 when the first 500 students arrived on the Canterbury campus.

Since then the University has developed dramatically to include campuses in Medway, Tonbridge and Wye, with student numbers now exceeding 15,000.

In addition, with a site in the centre of Brussels and the innovative University of the Transmanche, numerous European courses and excellent links to London and the continent, Kent is truly the UK's European university.

The University shield, which is engraved on this collection of jewellery, was taken from the coat of arms of the County of Kent. It incorporates a white horse rearing on its hind leg and this image is reputed to be the symbol of the ancient Saxon kingdom of Kent.

The three black birds are Cornish choughs that were taken from the arms of the City of Canterbury. They derive from the arms ascribed to Thomas Becket who was murdered in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170.
